What is printed on this sheet

A number line running 0 to 20 in ones, drawn down the page rather than across it. Twenty-one ticks, a numeral at each, four copies to an A4 sheet of 210 mm by 297, and 88 lines drawn in all. It counts upward: 0 at the foot, 20 at the head, the same way up as the y-axis on the coordinate grid this press also draws.

The numerals sit beside the rule instead of under it, which is the only thing about the drawing that the turn actually changes.

The same line, turned

There is not much more to it than that, and inventing more would be dishonest. The range is the range of the horizontal 0 to 20 sheet, the tick count is the same twenty-one, the step is the same one, and the sheet draws the same 88 lines. What differs is the direction the rule runs.

This press has no opinion about when an upright line is the right one to reach for. It is asked for often enough to be worth drawing, some people want the line that way round, and the sheet exists so that they are not left turning a horizontal print on its side, which puts every numeral on it on its side too.

Four copies come to the sheet, drawn from the same geometry, so they can be cut apart and used separately without any of them being slightly out.

Turning it back, and everything else that is set

The direction is a setting like any other, so the same line can be laid back across the page from the page itself. The first number, the last number and the step are adjustable; the numerals can be dropped so only the ticks print; and the number of copies to a sheet can be raised or lowered.

Paper can be set to A4, Letter, Legal or A5, the ink to grey, blue or black, and name-and-date lines added at the head. The file comes out as PDF, PNG or SVG, drawn in the reader’s own browser.

Print at 100 per cent, or Actual size. Fit to page scales an A4 sheet onto Letter at 94.1 per cent, and the bar in the foot margin, drawn 50 mm long and labelled with it, comes back at about 47 mm when that has happened.
