About Quire

Quire is a press for ruled paper. Every sheet is drawn from a measurement rather than copied from anywhere, and nothing you do here leaves your browser.

What this is

Quire draws ruled paper: squared, lined, dot grid, isometric, music staves, penmanship, Cornell notes, storyboard frames, number lines and coordinate grids. Most are set to whatever spacing you choose, on whichever of four papers; the last two arrive ready-made, with their numbers already printed on the sheet. Twenty-five sheets are published, each already set up, and each of them is also a bench you can change.

Drawn, not copied

Every sheet here is drawn from a measurement. The press is given a ruling, a spacing in millimetres or inches, and a paper in millimetres, and it works the drawing out from those: how many columns and rows fit, where the leftover fraction of a cell goes, where each line falls. Nothing is traced, scanned or reproduced from an existing template, and no file offered here is anyone else’s work. The counts on each page — 2,090 squares on a 5 mm A4 sheet, 1,989 for the same ruling on Letter — are what the drawing contains, not a description of it.

What a sheet promises is narrow and it is checkable: that the measurement printed on it is the measurement drawn on it. Whether that survives the journey to paper is up to the print dialogue, which is why every sheet carries a bar in the foot margin at a stated length — so the promise can be tested with a ruler instead of taken on trust.

Nothing leaves your browser

The drawing happens on your own machine. When you change the spacing or the paper, the sheet is redrawn there. When you ask for a PDF, a PNG or an SVG, the file is written there too. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and there is no copy of your sheet anywhere except on your computer and, once you have printed it, on your paper.
