What is printed on this sheet

A number line running 0 to 20 in ones. Twenty-one ticks, one for every whole number in that range, with the numeral for each printed at its own mark. Zero has a tick to itself at the left-hand end: the line does not begin at 1. The sheet is A4, 210 mm by 297, it carries four copies of that line one under another, and 88 lines are drawn on it in all.

That makes it a different kind of thing from most of the paper this press draws. A squared or lined sheet arrives blank and waits for the reader to supply the content. Here the numbers are the content, and the sheet is finished when it comes out of the printer.

Four to a sheet, meant to be cut

The four copies are not four alternatives to choose between. They are there so that one printed page becomes four separate lines: cut along the white space between them with scissors or a guillotine, and each one goes somewhere different, one to a desk. Printing four pages to get four lines spends three sheets of paper and a good deal of ink on empty margin.

The copies are identical because they are the same geometry drawn four times down the page rather than four drawings that happen to resemble one another. The ticks on the bottom line stand at the same distances as the ticks on the top one, so two strips cut from the same sheet can be laid against each other and they will agree.

Setting a different range, and printing it true

The range is a setting and not a fixture. The first number, the last number and the step can each be changed on the page; the numerals can be dropped altogether so that only the ticks remain; the number of copies to a sheet moves with them; and the line can be turned to run down the page instead of across it. Paper, ink and the name-and-date lines at the head are set here as they are on every other sheet from this press, and the file comes out as PDF, PNG or SVG.

Print it at 100 per cent, or at Actual size. A dialogue left on Fit to page scales an A4 sheet onto US Letter at 94.1 per cent, and the measuring bar in the foot margin, drawn 50 mm long and labelled with that length, comes back at about 47 mm when it has. Measure the bar once for each printer and the question is settled.
