What is printed on this sheet

A number line running -10 to 10 in ones. Twenty-one ticks, each with its numeral printed at it, the negative ones carrying their minus sign. The numbering starts at -10 on the left, passes through 0, and ends at 10 on the right. Four copies to an A4 sheet, 210 mm by 297, with 88 lines drawn in all.

Zero in the middle

The line runs through zero rather than beginning at it. Zero sits at the centre of the rule with the negative numbers to its left and the positive numbers to its right, so neither end of the line is where the counting starts, and the two halves are the same length as each other.

That is the structural difference from the other number lines drawn here, and it is worth noticing that it is not a difference in size. This sheet has twenty-one ticks on it, which is exactly what the 0 to 20 sheet has. The same count of marks, at the same step of one, with a different set of numerals printed underneath them and a different point of the line treated as its middle.

It also means the sheet cannot be improvised from another one. A line numbered from zero upwards has no marks to the left of its zero, so there is nowhere to write the negatives; the range has to be drawn that way from the start.

Changing where the line runs

The first and last numbers are settings, so the range can be widened, narrowed or moved off centre from the page itself, and the step between marks can be changed with them. The numerals can be dropped so that only the ticks print; the four copies to a sheet can be raised or lowered; and the line can be turned to run down the page instead of across it.

Print at 100 per cent, or Actual size. Fit to page scales an A4 sheet onto Letter at 94.1 per cent, and the 50 mm bar in the foot margin measures about 47 mm when it has.
