What is printed on this sheet

A number line running 1 to 20 in ones. Twenty ticks, each carrying its own numeral, the leftmost reading 1 and the rightmost 20. Four copies of the line sit one beneath another on A4, 210 mm by 297, and the sheet draws 84 lines in all.

There is nothing to configure before it means anything. The sheet is not a ruling the reader fills in; the numerals are already on it, and printing is the last step rather than the first.

Nothing to the left of the 1

This is the whole difference between this sheet and the one that runs 0 to 20, and it is worth stating plainly, because the two are a single tick apart and at arm’s length they look the same. Here the line starts at 1. There is no mark before it and no zero printed anywhere on the page. Twenty ticks, not twenty-one.

Both sheets are drawn and neither is a version of the other. If the run wanted is 0 to 20, that page exists and should be printed instead. Writing a zero on this one by hand puts a numeral where the sheet has no mark to hang it on, and the spacing either side of it will be wrong.

Four copies, and what else will change

The four lines are meant to be separated. Cut between them and the sheet becomes four strips, which is why they are drawn together rather than one to a page.

Everything that defines the line is adjustable from the page itself: the first number, the last number, the step between marks, whether the numerals print at all, how many copies come to a sheet, and whether the line runs across the page or down it. Paper can be set to A4, Letter, Legal or A5, the ink to grey, blue or black, and name-and-date lines added at the head. The file is drawn in the browser and comes out as PDF, PNG or SVG.

Print at 100 per cent, or Actual size. Fit to page scales an A4 sheet onto Letter at 94.1 per cent, which is enough to be wrong and not enough to be noticed; the 50 mm bar in the foot margin measures about 47 mm when that has happened.
