Nicole’s first story idea occurred to her when she was 12 and realized that having two of her Ken Dolls save the world was fun. A dozen years later, she gets her inspiration elsewhere. Working on the Alaska Railroad became train terrorists and a vampire in a wheelchair. Volunteering with Search and Rescue transformed into two families outrunning zombies by following a leader with anxiety attacks. Visiting Hawaii’s lava tunnels merged into a king fleeing his castle into endless caves, his family and subjects in tow. Living in Australia turned into a werewolf that only feeds on other werewolves. Finally, being a lifetime unschooler and atheist created a novel about what family really means, human, demon and angel blood aside. She has yet to write about Ken Dolls saving the world, but if she does, she sure as hell will make sure they’ve got the balls for it!
Nicole is a nine time winner of National Novel Writing Month. She has self-published two titles so far. She is a freelance author for Purple Toad Publishing House.
I Am Not a Hero: Would you kill for love? Would you fight for love? Would you kill your love for love?
Every vampire love story has been done before, right? The girl falls in love with the dark, brooding boy. The boy is tempted to bite her, pushes her away, only to come running back when she’s in supernatural danger from someone else. To try and find a new spin on the vampire tale would be silly, as silly as letting yourself get bitten by spiders over and over in the hopes that you’ll get superpowers and not have to wear your glasses anymore. Lavender is the girl who falls in love with Simon, the boy. He is tempted to bite her, but doesn’t push her away. She’s 22 and he looks 28 when they get married. Though the two are from Portland, Oregon, the entire story takes place aboard the Alaska Railroad, where they are celebrating their 50th anniversary. There are terrorists and unexpected sunshine and beautiful Alaskan scenery. More than that, however, this tale poses new questions…..what happens to a vampire/human couple when one of them gets old? When Lavender realizes that she won’t ever be able to have kids with him? When it dawns on her that she can’t kiss him in public because she looks old enough to be his grandma? When it dawns on Simon just how difficult it is to protect her as a vampire in a wheelchair? When Simon is faced with losing her or driving a stake into his own chest, what will love make him do? With cliffhangers left and right and with an ending full of twists, “I am not a Hero” explores new plots in vampire lore. Wheelchairs, guns, terrorists, railroads, blood, allergies, Nazi’s…..the question is, is all that as crazy as letting yourself get bitten by all those spiders? Yes? GOOD!
Let Us Fall: A Tale of Desperate Survival (Volume 1)
They flee down a tunnel that poses little chance of survival. With no food in their pockets and no horses to assist them, they must depend entirely upon the king that leads them, Gloomshayne Colony Caravane. His castle and kingdom have been stolen without warning and without mercy. He knows not the way out, and with panic brewing, it’s all he can do just to maintain calm. As if having overwhelming numbers in pursuit isn’t bad enough, his people begin drawing their blades on each other. They’re looking to place blame, regardless of guilt or innocence. Fighting against mutiny and rioting, it is the king’s responsibility to ensure the escape of his family and heirs, at any cost to himself and his people. Gloomshayne and his private guard Lucas may be a steadfast and unyielding wall between extinction and survival, but there are some dangers in these caves that might break them, and thus break them all.
